Lawmakers React to Zimmerman Charges

For more than a month, a vocal contingent of members of Congress have repeatedly called for justice in the killing of Trayvon Martin. They’ve spoken out on the House floor, held news conferences and organized rallies to support the Florida teen’s family. Wednesday night, numerous lawmakers rejoiced at the news that the shooter, George Zimmerman, has been charged with 2nd degree murder in the teen’s death. Here is compilation of some of the congressional reaction:

“It took 45 days, but finally, second-degree murder charges have been filed against the man who killed their son. That George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin is not in dispute. But letting him enjoy his freedom for 45 days was unconscionable,” Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla. Buy Windows 7 Product Key, wrote in a statement. “Now, the American justice system will take its course.”

“State Attorney Angela Corey’s decision to file charges against George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin is a positive first step towards some closure on this tragedy,” Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., noted, adding that she believed there was sufficient evidence for an arrest. “There can be no happy ending in this story, but people need to believe that the system works fairly for everyone and this development is a good sign.”

“This is a step in the right direction towards restoring the public’s confidence in our system of justice. This also sends a clear message that shootings of unarmed individuals will be taken seriously,” Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Exchange Server Key, D-Texas, stated. “I am glad that wheels of justice have started to turn and I trust the right decision, as determined by a court of law, on the proper punishment for Mr. Zimmerman will be made. Now members of the legislatures, both state and federal, need to ensure that these laws are not used to cover the misdeeds of those who strike a person dead in the streets.”

“I, like many others, thought that an arrest based upon probable cause was not unreasonable,” Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green wrote in a statement. “Mr. Zimmerman now deserves a fair trial. I look forward to a just verdict after a review of the evidence.”

“The arrest of George Zimmerman for the death of Trayvon Martin and the charges to be brought against him show that our criminal justice system is functioning,” Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., stated. “In this case Office 2007 Key, as in all others, the defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and it is important too that we let this case proceed in due course through the court system.”

Obama nudges China on rights, stays mum on Chen

WASHINGTON/MIDLAND, Texas (Reuters) – President Barack Obama nudged China on Monday to improve its human rights record and his top diplomat said she will raise the issue in Beijing this week, but both stayed mum about a Chinese dissident said to be under U.S. protection.

At a news conference, Obama appeared to be walking a fine line between not saying anything that would make it harder to resolve Chen Guangcheng’s case while conveying U.S. concern for human rights and appreciation for wider cooperation with China.

Chen’s case arose as the U.S. secretaries of state and treasury prepared to travel to China for talks on Thursday and Friday with senior Chinese officials, an annual meeting likely to be overshadowed by the fate of the blind dissident.

Chen, who has opposed forced abortions in China, escaped house arrest in rural China and is under U.S. protection in Beijing, according to a U.S.-based rights group, creating a diplomatic dilemma for the world’s top economic powers.

Analysts said the dissident appears to have two options: going into exile, which he has told associates he does not want to do, or getting the Chinese authorities to allow him to live in freedom within China, a challenge at best.

Bob Fu, whose religious and political rights advocacy group ChinaAid is the chief source of information on Chen, suggested the most plausible solution would be for him to leave China for the United States with his family, ostensibly for medical care.

“Another option that is more realistic is for him and his family to come to the U.S., face-savingly for the Chinese government, to receive medical treatment,” Fu told Reuters in an interview in Midland, Texas, where his group is based.

CLINTON TO RAISE ‘EVERY’ ISSUE IN BEIJING

Neither Obama nor Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said a word in public about Chen, whose shadow will loom large at this week’s U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing even if he himself remains invisible.

Asked about Chen’s case, Obama told a news conference: “Obviously I am aware of the press reports on the situation in China but I am not going to make a statement on the issue.”

Obama said the issue of human rights comes up every time there are senior U.S.-Chinese talks, saying the United States does so both on principle and because “we actually believe China will be stronger as it opens up and liberalizes its own system.”

“We want China to be strong, we want it to be prosperous and we are very pleased with all the areas of cooperation that we have been able to engage in,” he said at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

“But we also believe that that relationship will be that much stronger and China will be that much more prosperous and strong as you see improvements on human rights issues in that country,” he said.

Clinton also ducked a question about Chen, but she hinted that she would not be shy about the matter in Beijing.

“A constructive relationship includes talking very frankly about those areas where we do not agree, including human rights,” she told a news conference with the Philippine foreign and defense ministers.

“That is the spirit that is guiding me as I take off for Beijing tonight and I can certainly guarantee that we will be discussing every matter including human rights that is pending between us,” Clinton added.

CHEN ADAMANT ABOUT STAYING IN CHINA

A senior U.S. diplomat, Kurt Campbell, U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, flew to Beijing to work on a solution to the Chen case ahead of this week’s U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing, a source briefed on the matter said on Monday.

The U.S. State Department said nothing about Campbell’s whereabouts over the weekend but on Monday confirmed he was in Beijing. A State Department spokesman described his trip as part of the preparations for Clinton’s talks this week.

Associates of Chen said he is firmly against leaving China.

“He was adamant that he would not apply for political asylum with any country,” said Guo Yushan, a Beijing-based researcher and rights advocate who has campaigned for Chen and helped bring him to Beijing after his escape.

Yang Jianli Tattoo Case Box, who runs the U.S.-based pro-democracy group Initiatives for China, said he believed that both the United States and China would prefer that Chen go into exile but that he did not think the dissident would.

“He is not the (kind of) person who will give in,” Yang said. “He is so determined to stay in China.”

But Fu, who said he has spoken with senior U.S. diplomats in China about Chen’s case Tattoo Transfer Paper, suggested the dissident ultimately may have little choice.

“At the end of the day that is the only option that is left, if he wants safety and freedom for himself and his family Tattoo Machine Supply,” he said.

The source briefed on the Chen case said Campbell, the senior U.S. diplomat who traveled to Beijing over the weekend, had an enormous challenge.

“I think Kurt is there to negotiate one of the two more favorable outcomes, either his asylum or his exoneration by senior Chinese officials so that he can return home to Shandong and live unmolested,” said the source, saying this was an inference on his part.

“I don’t think either of those outcomes is going to be easy to negotiate.”

On Sunday a top Obama administration official, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, declined to comment on the Chen case or whether the United States was protecting the dissident, but he neatly summarized the dilemma for Obama.

“I think in all instances the president tries to balance our commitment to human rights, making sure that the people throughout the world have the ability to express themselves freely and openly, but also that we can continue to carry out our relationships with key countries overseas,” Brennan said on the “Fox News Sunday” television program.

Politics as a Playground Game of Four Square

This past weekend I was horsing around with my daughter, playing in the parking lot with a green Buzz Lightyear “four square” ball Cheap Missoni Dresses, and it got me thinking about four square. Many of us became familiar with this playground activity as youngsters; it involves a person standing in each square and the ball being used in a variety of ways to eliminate someone in an opposing square.  The game features all sorts of rules and strategies that have changed over time. My adult sons actually have gotten into it, adding their own sets of rules and tactics. (As an aside, it is awesome to see adults take up the games of our youth.)

These thoughts led me to this year’s presidential race — Lord have mercy, Dowd Hale Bob Dresses sale, are you sure you’re not having a wee nip of the Irish sacrament? — and what today could be considered four areas of concern where the candidates need to have their own tactics and strategies. Let’s see where the ball bounces and lands …

ONE: There has been considerable discussion of the demographics and possible voting patterns of this year’s electorate. Much has been said of Mitt Romney underperforming among women and Latino voters. This is a problem for him. Looking at past history, if Romney does not improve dramatically among these two groups, you can safely say the presidency is a distant dream for him. President Obama is currently doing as well or better among these two groups than he did when he comfortably won them in 2008.  But Obama is extremely weak and underperforming among middle-class white males. Looking at head-to-head and his job performance numbers, Obama is in a very vulnerable position because of his lack of voting strength among this group. Again, looking at history, you would have to say that if he doesn’t dramatically improve, Obama would have a hard time winning re-election. This is why the race is within the margin of error today and will stay close for at least a while, and why it’s important to look at all voting groups and not just a couple to get a feel for this race.

TWO: Keep your eye on economic indicators much more than ad spending, candidate travel, the machinations of activists or any given speech. Data such as unemployment rates, consumer confidence and inflation will be much more determinative of this race than all those other factors combined. These fiscal factors are a major component of Obama’s job approval, and, as history tells us, are key to whether he gets re-elected. The trajectory of the economic data over the coming weeks and months will also be the biggest impact on how both Obama and Romney talk about the economy and their plans. Their speeches and policies will have to be adjusted along the way, based on whether that data is good, bad or neutral.

THREE: It already seems Romney is sending a signal about the type of vice president he’s seeking.  Super PACs supporting him already have begun to attack Obama for his “celebrity” and accusing him of not paying attention to the country’s problems.  This tells me that Romney isn’t going to do some highly-charged celebrity choice of his own; you won’t see any “game change” pick like Sarah Palin. My guess is, his ice cream choice in picking a running mate will be more plain vanilla than rocky road.

FOUR: If I was running the Obama campaign, I would take most of the money in my bank account that has to be spent before the conventions (primary dollars), and overwhelm Romney with a national ad buy. Obama currently has a 10-to-1 cash-on-hand advantage, and because Romney is still in a weak position from the primary process, the president shouldn’t give Romney any time to recover. I would spend a major sum of money on ads framing this race — and I would do it nationally, not just in some targeted state buy.  This is really a national campaign, and the Obama campaign should use their advantage and overwhelm Romney over the next six weeks.

That’s my four square analysis on the race, and my last bit of advice to the campaigns — and anyone else — is to grab a ball when you get the chance, take your mind off your worries and initiate a fun playground challenge. Because in the end, the campaigns that laugh the most and have the most fun are nearly always the ones that win.

Monger Me, Obama!

Obama supporters

SAN ANGELO Tattoo Supplies, Texas—On Friday, I stood in the crowd at Barack Obama’s San Antonio rally next to a gray-haired man reading Ficino’s Platonic Theology in Latin. Beside him, a young interracial couple—which felt like the norm, rather than the exception Tattoo Supplies, in the audience—hugged as Stevie Wonder played over the loudspeakers. The Verizon Wireless Center had a charged feel, and not just because of the rotation of soul songs blasting around us: Most of the rally-goers had waited for half an hour in a line that snaked to the edge of the parking lot while the flat light of the setting sun sliced the wide sky.

Even the cities in Texas have a quality of open space. At the rally, that quality translated into precisely the type of civic openness that Obama has advocated for throughout his campaign. The audience was talkative, friendly, and multiracial; earlier, everyone had held hands and prayed. The neo-Platonist said that Obama reminded him of Bobby Kennedy, the kind of figure able to inspire audiences to political action. He didn’t understand Hillary’s attacks on Obama’s optimistic rhetoric, or the press’s skepticism about it. What was wrong, exactly, with using language to inspire a crowd to vote, to care about their civil liberties? Talking about policy details wouldn’t get them to the polls. Inspiring them would. On my right, a young black man screamed when Obama entered the amphitheatre, and he rushed over to greet him; he came back pumping his fist and saying, “He shook my hand!” I’d expected such latter-day Beatlemania, but two things surprised me: First, the excitement wasn’t based on gender in the way I’d come to expect. (If anything, the guys seemed more excited than the ladies.) Second, the energy was far more sober than the reports of Obama fever had led me to believe.

I’ve been living in Texas for two months, mostly in Marfa, a small town in the western part of the state where ranchers and artists happily coexist; over the past weeks, I’ve driven across Texas talking in a casual way with people about what they think of the Democratic primary taking place tomorrow. Nearly everyone I’ve spoken to has said they believe Obama will win. In Austin, a trendy store not far from the University of Texas was selling “Barack Obama is Good!” T-shirts. A few in the women’s large size were left, but the men’s had nearly sold out. On a plane from Houston to Austin, I talked to an ex-Navy diver who was planning to vote for McCain: He hoped that Hillary would win the primary, but thought it unlikely, because Obama had seized the imagination of so many voters. (“What do you think he really believes?” he asked me. “I can’t tell.)

Meanwhile, a middle-aged gas station attendant in the small town of Brady reluctantly exposed his feelings about Hillary. “She scares me like the devil,” he said, slowly. A Republican, he didn’t like talking about his politics to anyone, he said, and then added that he thought that the “Osama—Osama Bin Laden” fellow had some good ideas: for example, about how CEOs shouldn’t make in 10 minutes what workers make in a year (a line from Obama’s stump speech). The most striking thing to me—a lifetime New Englander—is just how independent-minded Texas voters see themselves as being. It’s a live-and-let-live attitude that extends from coffee to politics. (“I don’t listen to the radio. I don’t read the newspapers. I don’t watch TV,” a man in a coffee shop in San Angelo told me.)

Aftershock

The New York Timesand Los Angeles Timeslead, while the Wall Street Journal tops its world-wide newsbox, with the bombings in Iraq that destroyed the two minarets at the Golden Mosque in Samarra, one of the country’s most revered Shiite shrines. Militants bombed the same mosque in February 2006 and destroyed its golden dome, an event that is widely credited with sparking a brutal wave of sectarian killings that, according to the LAT,left approximately 34,000 people dead. USA Todayleads an interview with the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus Replica A Lange & Sohne Watches, who acknowledged that the bombings could spark a new round of sectarian violence. Petraeus said that although sectarian killings have been decreasing in Baghdad, “we’re going to have to see what the impact of this tragedy in Samarra is on that.” If there is an increase in sectarian killings, “This attack may well prove to be the nail in the coffin of the security plan,” an analyst tells the LAT.

The Washington Postleads with the House and Senate judiciary committees issuing subpoenas to two former senior White House officials as part of their continuing investigation into the firings of nine U.S. attorneys. Along with the subponeas for former counsel Harriet Miers and political affairs director Sara Taylor, the committees also requested White House documents. The move immediately raised tensions between Congress and the administration as the White House accused Congress of “trying to create some media drama” and urged lawmakers to interview officials privately and not under oath.

Worried about the potential for new violence as a result of the bombings in Samarra, the Iraqi government imposed curfews and stepped up protection of mosques around the country. Political and religious leaders urged Iraqis to practice restraint. Although everyone notes there were some attacks against Sunni mosques across the country, the NYT is cautiously optimistic that perhaps there won’t be a new round of violence.

Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr, whose militia has been blamed for much of the sectarian violence that took place after the mosque was bombed last year, also urged restraint as he said Sunnis weren’t responsible for the latest attack Tonino Lamborghini Replica Watches, and he blamed “the hidden hands of the occupiers.” Petraeus said Sadr’s call for restraint was “very constructive.” But the 30 lawmakers of Sadr’s political bloc said they will boycott parliament until the government begins to rebuild the Samarra mosque. The NYT has a good slideshow with photographs of the shrine after each bombing.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the bombing, and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki blamed Sunni insurgents with ties to al-Qaida. Everyone notes suspicion immediately fell on the mosque’s guards Replica Emporio Armani Watches, who were detained for questioning. But the WP interviewed some witnesses who said “a special unit of commandos” went to the mosque on Tuesday night and forced the guards to leave.

The WP off-leads, and everyone mentions, a new Pentagon report that says violence in Iraq has been increasing in recent months. Ever since the new security crackdown put more U.S. troops in Baghdad and Anbar, attacks have increased in most other parts of the country, including areas where there was little violence before the “surge.”

The NYT and WP front Hamas forces continuing to gain control over large portions of the Gaza Strip. Approximately 22 Palestinians were killed yesterday. The United Nations agency that gives aid to a significant portion of Gaza’s population announced that it cut back its operations after two of its employees were killed. Everyone reports that while Hamas has been stockpiling weapons for months How to buy Replica Hamilton Watches, Fatah fighters are running out of ammunition. Meanwhile, the fighting spread to the West Bank as Fatah gunmen raided a production company. The NYT says Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas might agree to give Hamas control over Gaza as long as he can keep the West Bank.

Remember the report in March that said the FBI had frequently made errors, and potentially broke the law, while collecting personal information without judicial approval through national security letters? Well Imitation Movado Watches, the WP fronts an internal FBI audit that reveals the problem is much worse than initially thought. The audit found that these types of errors were made more than 1,000 times. And since the audit only looked into 10 percent of the national security investigations since 2002, the real number is likely to be much higher. Most of the violations were a result of agents keeping extra information they got from telephone companies and Internet providers. But in more than 20 cases, agents specifically requested information “that U.S. law did not allow them to have.”

In other Justice Department news Buy Cheap Replica Hublot Watches, the NYT fronts a look at how the Bush administration has “recast the federal government’s role in civil rights” by focusing on religious discrimination while spending less time pursuing cases that involve race.

The WSJ goes high with a new inhouse poll that says President Bush’s approval rating is now 29 percent, which marks a significant decrease from the 35 percent he received in April. In other bad news for the GOP, 52 percent of Americans say they want a Democrat to win the presidential election, while only 31 percent say they want a Republican.
